This book was advertised to me as “just a short story about a south korean woman.” Given the little context and the amount of hype over the book, I put it on my short read list. It highlights a common life and makes the argument that there is no such thing.
The Goldfinch
I’d been avoiding this mammoth since it came out but I finally cracked one day when the mood was right and plowed through it in less than a week. A boy, his mothers violent death, and a painting. You’ll feel like you know the characters front and back by the last page.
Normal People
This book (now a popular Hulu series) is the story of a complicated friendship between two teens. I tried hard to love Rooney’s characters but they felt like they tried so hard to be unique that they fell into predictable stereotypes. I’m hoping I like conversations with friends better.
A Gentleman in Moscow
I love historical fiction. Towels writes of Count Rostov, sentenced to house arrest at a luxury hotel. It feels reminiscent of other dark, mysterious novels like “Shadow of the Wind.”
How to Be Successful without Hurting Men's Feelings
Sarah Cooper is hitting a much deserved peak in publicity so I ordered this and another of her books in spirit of support. It’s hilarious and easily one of the best gifts I could think of for any woman you know who is trying to have a career – and works with men.
Daisy Jones & The Six
I’m a huge fan of Taylor Jenkins Reid. I read her book “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” last year and highly recommend it. I was excited to see this new book (it’s already been nabbed by Witherspoon for an Amazon show). The format of the book is interesting (a series of dialogue back and forth between members of a band on the rise).
